Shelby Astle (co-chair), Kansas State University, USA

Shelby Astle, B.S., is a master’s student in Applied Family Science at Kansas State University. She is currently working as a graduate research assistant under Dr. Michelle L. Toews with a focus on examining teen parenting and sexual violence. Shelby’s research areas focus on parent-child sexual communication, sexual self-concept, and sexual socialization in adolescence and young adulthood. She aims to use her research to expand the field of sex research to include more holistic measures of sexual well-being and to help young people develop positive sexual self-concepts by intervening in multiple systems (e.g., parents, school-based sex education, etc.). Shelby is also passionate about public scholarship and believes in the importance of sharing research with young adults in order to help them navigate relationships and transitions during emerging adulthood.
